How can I describe
what I see? The city of Petra is definitely one of those
places where you would say "WOW", then stand there and just
be amazed by its size, engineering and architecture.
Here is where
they filmed the movie "Indiana Jones, The last crusader".
At that time, I thought Petra was just another creation of
Hollywood, and could never imagine this place really exists.
The Siq is the
only way to enter the city of Petra. After seemingly
endless turns, the Khazneh, or the Treasury, is suddenly appear
in front of my eyes. The facade, carved out from the
sandstone cliff wall, is 40m high, and is remarkably well
preserved. The name Khazneh, which means 'treasury'
comes from the legend that it was used as a hiding place for
treasure. Perhaps it is here where they hide the Aladdin
Lamp.
They said Petra
is half as old as time, hiking down the dusty trail, visiting
the caves, climbing hills to see temples and monastery that
have long forgetting by human, it really brings me to another
world. I feel I am stepping back into time. The
entire city somehow creates this mystery fantasy to the eyes
and the soul, and I love such fantasy.
The monastery
is another hour hiking up the mountain, I will save that for
tomorrow. Enough hiking for the day.
I ran into four
US Army soldiers who are here in Petra for their R&R.
They are on UN peace mission and station in Sinai, Egypt.
They told me that the situation in Israel is quite intense
at the moment, and suggest me not to go. I don't want
to think about it until I get to Amman.
